elm and oak

An old elm surrounded by an old oak fence. Behind the barn at Lost Acres

The fence was built decades ago and the tree was spared. Among certainly other trees in the pasture, this elm was spared. In fact, when I moved here years ago it was surrounded by another square fence that has since decayed and been removed.

Why the protective fence.? To protect it from livestock? To protect livestock from the tree? I don't know.

But here it is budding out for another spring. It no longer needs its earlier square fence. It takes care of itself.
